Skills over MCP

Discover ast-mcp's canonical agent skill or export it for a host without MCP Skills support.

ast-mcp serves its canonical ast-mcp agent skill over MCP to clients that support the MCP Skills extension. This keeps workflow instructions and supporting references with the server that provides the tools.

Discover and load the skill

After connecting to ast-mcp, a compatible host discovers the server's Skills capability and can request the available skill metadata. It retrieves the skill entry through skills/list or skills/get, then reads SKILL.md and supporting files through resources/read.

The manifest identifies each resource with its URI, SHA-256 digest, and byte size. The host can verify the exact bytes it receives and use the manifest's cache metadata. Each skill remains bound to its originating MCP server.

Hosts control how skills are selected, approved, and loaded into the agent context. Reading a SKILL.md resource does not activate the skill by itself. Support and user experience vary by host; see the MCP client support information.

Export for unsupported clients

A host without MCP Skills support can use a local copy:

ast-mcp skills export <destination>

The destination is the skill root and contains SKILL.md. Export preserves files already present, including customized copies. It records managed file hashes in .ast-mcp-export.json. The command rejects symlink destinations and symlinked support directories.

New installations do not automatically install skill files on disk. Export only when a client needs a filesystem-based skill directory. The export does not configure the host or activate the skill; follow that host's instructions to load the directory.

Legacy skill directories from previous installations remain in place during migration. Manage or remove those files using the host's normal skill-management controls after checking for local customizations.

Update a manual skill

Use this command only for a manually selected skill directory:

ast-mcp skills update <destination>

The command updates managed files only when their bytes still match their recorded hashes. It adds missing resources. It preserves customized, untracked, and obsolete files.

For legacy exports, the command adopts files that match the current bundled bytes. Other existing files remain unchanged and appear as conflicts. Export a fresh comparison copy, then reconcile those conflicts manually.

Both commands return written, updated, unchanged, preserved, obsolete, and conflicts arrays. Update exits nonzero when conflicts require attention. Structured results remain on stdout. Error instructions go to stderr.

The manifest uses versioned SHA-256 baselines. Keep it with the skill directory. Do not edit hashes to force an update. Invalid manifests fail before resource writes.

An interrupted update can leave some files updated. Rerun the same command after resolving the interruption. The command adopts files that already match the current bundle.

Only one export or update can hold the destination lock. If a process stops unexpectedly, inspect .ast-mcp-export.lock. Confirm that no export or update still runs before removing that lock. Never remove an active lock.

Choose MCP or local delivery

A host with MCP Skills support loads current instructions from the connected server. It needs no disk refresh unless you select a local skill copy.

Host selection rules can let an older local copy shadow the MCP skill. Check which skill location the host selected. Preserve customized copies. Use the host controls to select MCP delivery, or explicitly update the chosen local directory.

Package upgrades, host configuration updates, and manual skill updates are separate operations. After upgrading the package, reconnect the server through the host. Use ast-mcp update to refresh managed host configuration. Use ast-mcp skills update <destination> only for manual skills.
